Tips for Models: PDF Print E-mail

Practice, Practice, Practice,

Whatever you work at in life you must practice, modelling is no different.  A large part of this means practice posing.  A model that excels at posing will get more and higher paying jobs than just standing there and looking beautiful.

So what should you do to practice?

   1. Before your photo shoot get posing ideas.  Look through ads, magazines and websites.  Try and remember poses from previous shoots.

   2. Choose 10 of these poses and practice them in front of a mirror until you feel comfortable and know how great you look doing these poses.

   3. Control your hands.  Look in the mirror, are your hand placed with purpose and add to your pose or are they hanging there limp.  Don't just let them hang, put them on your hips, hook a thumb in the pocket or belt loop, or do something with them.  See where magazine models place their hands for ideas.

HeatherSkills.com website shoot PDF Print E-mail

So Heather came to me and asked me to shoot her website photos that Justin from Gus Alan is creating this week! She said its going to be exact opposite of our last shoot together. She wanted cute girl next door feeling with a little bit of nerd and naughtyness. My first thought was the Taylor Swift music video "you belong with me" when she is in her room studying playing cute with the boy next door. Since this shoot is for her website, Heather wanted a plain background so I brought out the white and we used a blow up mattress to make it seem like her bedroom. We started setting up for the shoot at 6, the first shot was taken at 6:30, was done by 10. Justin Hammond was there shooting video so make sure you check out the behind the scenes video and all the pictures at heatherskills.com

Marina Bay Beach Shoot PDF Print E-mail

After meeting with videographer/graphic artist Justin Hammond at Auburn Mall we took off for Quincy, Mass. around 11am. Marina Bay is the best place to shoot glamour in New England for sure! They have a florida/cali style set up with palm trees and sand, located right on the ocean next to a boat port and a beautiful boardwalk. Not to mention across the harbor was the skyline of Boston.

I brought my strobe along with several extension cords since I wasnt sure of plug outlet situations. When we arrived we met up with the beautiful Dynasty Model- Ashley Langston. Justin took some "behind the scenes" video footage while I took some portfolio shots for Ashley. We started out using strobe around the club area, using mirrors, cabanas and ocean as backdrops. There was a private event going on so we had to leave the club earlier then we thought, not to worry since we were surrounded by beach and great places to shoot. We found a small field, a palm tree, and a boat dock we shot on. As it started getting later in the day, the tide went out and we got some great shots under the docks. Shooting in shade while overexposing the background is my favorite way to shoot. I basically used the shade as my main light thus blasting out the background to get correct exposure on Ashley. I was also using my 50mm fixed lens. Shooting at a 2.8 with a fast shutter speed and holding my breath. : ) As the sun went down, I closed down my aperture giving me a good depth of field, used my external flash for fill, and got some great shots of Ashley on the beach with the city of Boston in the background. I try to make my photos all about the model, edgy and curvy, with random things in the background, hidden enough to not take away from the model but there for you to look further into the picture and see.
The drive home was hell, we hit traffic on the Mass Pike but it was definitely worth it since we got some great video footage, photos, and an unforgettable experience. Heres the video Justin Hammond put together, enjoy...
